As grazing season rolls in, I know you’re all busier and busier. And questions are coming up for you. Whether it’s problems with fencing or getting water to the herd, or trying to adjust your grazing management, you need answers NOW.
So, here’s how you can find answers at On Pasture, along with some ideas for where to find a real, live person to talk to.
On Pasture Resources
Search by Area of Interest
Check out the menu bar across the top of the page. If you mouse over “Sections,” you’ll find a drop down menu that shows all of the categories we cover in On Pasture. Hover over one of those categories and you’ll see subtopics that fit there. Select what works for you and you’ll find a whole host of articles to browse through.
Use Your Own Search Terms
On the right hand side of the menu bar, there’s a little magnifying glass. If you hover over it, a little “Search Site” box will appear. Type in what you’d like to find and Ta Da! There you go! Still having a hard time? Drop me a line and I’ll let you know if we have an article to cover your need. If we don’t, I’ll work on adding it to our library.
That’s up in the menu bar too. I’ve gathered articles together that folks have expressed interest in. If you have suggestions for something that you’d like me to work on for you, let me know.
Maybe you have a workshop or a pasture walk coming up and you’d like to share some information with participants. That’s why we made up these handouts that you can download and copy in color or black and white. You’ll find information on grazing planning, understanding soils, and more with easy links to the articles at On Pasture. Again, if there’s a handout that you’d really like to have, mail. I count on the On Pasture community’s input to help me make sure you’re getting what you need!
By the way, some folks have been suggesting that we put together books of articles (digital and hard copy). We can do this, and your ideas about topic areas would be very helpful. We need more heads working on ideas for this so feel free to chip in your two cents! If it’s something to chat about, I can always call you too!
You can look for all kinds of grazing-related workshops here, and if you have an event, you can add it to the calendar here. (It’s Free!) Also, if you’re looking for great speakers, here’s a list of On Pasture authors who would add a lot to your next event.
If you have an event or product you’d like to advertise, we can help with that. You can check rates here, or contact Peter Williams for more information. (Not to brag, but with over 100,000 readers a month, we’re the most read publication on grazing, so we’re a great venue for getting the word out.)
Talk to a Real Live Person!
Nothing can replace having an expert come visit and talk through things with you. They can answer your questions and even give you answers to questions that hadn’t occurred to you yet. Here’s where to find someone like that:
NRCS staff is great at finding solutions for on-the-ground problems you’re having, and they have programs that provide both technical and financial assistance for projects that improve soil health, water quality, and wildlife habitat while improving profitability for farmers and ranchers. So call them up and see how they can help you. Just keep in mind that many offices have small staffs and this is their busy time of the year too so you’ll need to coordinate schedules.
These folks provide many of the same services that the NRCS does and coordinate with them as well. So find one near you and tell them what you’re looking for.
OK – I think that’s a pretty good list. If you have something to add to it, do let us all know in the comments below.
Thanks for reading, and stay safe out there!
