Why do we do it this way? How can we do it better?

When I’m up against a challenge, I have some questions that I ask myself:

Why do we do it this way?
How can we do it better?
What is another right answer?

That last question, “What is another right answer?” is a principle for creativity and problem solving that I learned from Dewitt Jones. Dewitt is a National Geographic photographer, who has explored where creativity comes from and how we can all use a few basic principles to creatively address challenges in our lives and our businesses.

Dewitt’s principles have been at work for you at On Pasture since the very beginning. Every week we publish articles that encourage you to consider, “Why do we do it this way?” Then, to help answer the follow-up question, “How can we do it better?” we provide examples of what others have done suggestions for how you might fit those ideas to your own unique operation. And, because we know each reader has different abilities and needs, we don’t stop with just one example. We’re always on the lookout for another right answer.

I recently found this 6:26 minute video where Dewitt summarizes some of his key principles, using his photography as an example and then extending it to how we might use them as well. I hope it will inspire you to see how creative you can be with just a few tweaks to how you think. I also hope it gives you a new perspective on On Pasture and the articles you find here.

Enjoy! And thanks for reading!

I am the founder, editor and publisher of On Pasture, now retired. My career spanned 40 years of finding creative solutions to problems, and sharing ideas with people that encouraged them to work together and try new things. From figuring out how to teach livestock to eat weeds, to teaching range management to high schoolers, outdoor ed graduation camping trips with fifty 6th graders at a time, building firebreaks with a 130-goat herd, developing the signs and interpretation for the Storm King Fourteen Memorial trail, receiving the Conservation Service Award for my work building the 150-mile mountain bike trail from Grand Junction, Colorado to Moab, Utah...well, the list is long so I'll stop with, I've had a great time and I'm very grateful.
