We’re All in This Together

I like watching ants, especially the leaf cutter ants that live in my backyard. They are such hard workers and I like how their lives revolve around everyone doing their jobs to provide for the greater good. It’s how I like to imagine all of us – everyone doing the best they can with what we have to provide for our families, our communities and our world.

In this TED-ED video about leaf cutter ants, working with what you’ve got means puke and poop to grow the fungus they farm and feed on. It means a queen who gets the ball rolling, big ants who guard the nest opening, littler ants who do all the leaf hauling to bring leaves to feed the fungus, and teeny tiny ants to clean bacteria off the leaves that could otherwise harm the fungus. It’s just 5 minutes, and the animation is great. So I think you’ll like it.

Maybe I’m silly, but watching this video, I imagined all the people in my life who make my life work and help us all move along. Most of them I never see, but thanks to them, I have roads to drive on, stores filled with the things I need, and entertainment at my fingertips.

For all you do to improve the lives of everyone around you, THANKS!

And thanks for reading!

I am the founder, editor and publisher of On Pasture, now retired. My career spanned 40 years of finding creative solutions to problems, and sharing ideas with people that encouraged them to work together and try new things. From figuring out how to teach livestock to eat weeds, to teaching range management to high schoolers, outdoor ed graduation camping trips with fifty 6th graders at a time, building firebreaks with a 130-goat herd, developing the signs and interpretation for the Storm King Fourteen Memorial trail, receiving the Conservation Service Award for my work building the 150-mile mountain bike trail from Grand Junction, Colorado to Moab, Utah...well, the list is long so I'll stop with, I've had a great time and I'm very grateful.
