Gardening for Success 2018 Conference

Gardening For Success Conference, April 14-15, 2018, Laramie County Community College, Pathfinder Building, Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The Laramie County Master Gardener and the University of Wyoming, Laramie County Extension office, the State Master Gardener Association and the Wyoming Farmers Market Association are pleased to host a two day multi track specialty crop gardening program to challenge, inspire, motivate and take you to the next level of gardening success, Saturday, April 14, and Sunday April 15, 2018.

Everyone is welcome: From beginners, backyard gardeners, master gardeners, 4-H, community gardeners to farmer’s market gardeners there will be something to learn and help you be better at what you do in the garden. This conference is open to the world no gardening experience is needed.

Topics include: growing lavender, landscape conifers, perennials for the Rocky Mountain Region, growing iris,  growing vertical, using worms for composting, native bee habitat, roses, seed saving, soil basics, medicinal herbs, growing herbs or strawberries in a high tunnels/hoop houses, hands on food processing, food safety and much more.

We are offering three (3) workshops on advanced gardening topics to take any gardener to the next level of skills. They are Soils, Plant Diseases and Pruning.  Each topics is split into two educational sections. The first part is a one-hour morning refresher.  After lunch, the second part is an in-depth, hands on workshop.  Any Master Gardener who takes any of these classes will qualify for an “Advanced Master Gardener” certificate for that topic.   You do not need to be a master gardener to take these classes, but only current master gardeners will receive a certificate. You can also just take the morning refresher without taking the afternoon class, however, you will not receive an Advanced Master Gardener certificate in that area.

In addition to five tracks of lectures on day one to pick and choose from, we get everyone in the mood with morning keynote speakers Scott Skogerboe from Fort Collings Wholesale Nursery on “Edible Landscapes” David Salman, Chief Horticulturist for High Country Gardens will be our dinner speaker on “Sensational Salvia and their companions”.

The conference is offering four (4) hands-on workshops where you take home what you make. They are “Lavender Leisure*” crafts you can create with lavender from potpourri to wreaths and more.  “Grapes into Jellies and Juice*” hands on make jellies and taste your way through different grapes.  “African Violet Help*”hands on doing what you were afraid with this delicate plant. “Herbs and Teas*” blend your own tea, make a tonic to take home, you will have a better understanding of herb ratios to get the most from what you make. A separate materials fee will be paid directly by you to the speaker.

The Garden Hat Contest is back for the 2018 conference. Also, there will be a Silent Auction benefitting the State Master Gardener Association’s scholarship fund. This will feature many fun gardening accoutrements.
