Legacy on the Land: Compelling Stories and Creative Tools for Land Succession
January 25, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm$60
Are you a landowner concerned about the best ways to hand off your land to the next generation of land stewards and managers? Join Western Landowners Alliance, other landowners and expert speakers for a day of presentation and discussion on this important topic.
The average age of farmers and ranchers nationally is 58, and over 60 in New Mexico. Half of these land stewards are expected to retire in the next decade. As this transition happens, we risk losing vast amounts of open land that provide food, fiber, water and wildlife habitat—unless we ensure a successful hand-off to the next generation. We are already losing 3,000 acres of prime agricultural lands to development every day.
It’s time to talk about solutions and tools for land succession.
Through expert speakers, landowner panels, breakout group discussions and Q&As, we will explore creative tools, mechanisms and approaches to keeping land in the family or in production as ownership changes hands. Landowner panelists will share family challenges, success stories and creative solutions for keeping families engaged and working lands healthy from one generation to the next.
Presentations and discussion topics will include creative legal and financial mechanisms for land transfer, including operating foundations, educational institutions and conservation easements, governance models, family engagement, and much more.
Register today to save your spot. Registration fee of $60 includes lunch, snacks and coffee. Space is limited.
Join us for dinner at a local restaurant after the session to continue the conversation (location TBA).
