May 15 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pmFree
Speaker and farm owner, Joe Orefice, a Cornell Natural Resource Specialist, will be presenting field management techniques as he demonstrates how to evaluate a forested area for timber and as a feed source for livestock. Participants will be walking with Joe as he identifies plants and trees, and shows how a working silvopasture plan can bring a farm profits from both the timber and the livestock. Franklin County, NY Soil and Water Conservation District will be there to help participants wade through the myriad of programs and assistance farms can receive to assist them with their farm goals, while preventing nutrient losses from winding up in the waters of Lake Champlain. Myra Lawyer, an Ag Practices Specialist for the NY portion of the Lake Champlain Basin Program , will be available at this meeting to offer forage identification tools, and proactive planning tips for farms to identify areas of potential non-point pollution to help reduce the Phosphorus loading of the Lake. This field event is eligible for 1NYLT, 4 Category SAF and 4.5 CCA credits. Registration is required in order to reserve a lunch.
