VFGC Annual Winter Conference 2022- The Green Side of Beef: In Defense of Grassland Agriculture

January 18, 2022 - January 21, 2022

$35
Let’s be matter-of-fact for a moment. Is beef truly bad for the planet? At this year’s annual VFGC Winter Conference we will delve into the topic “The Green Side of Beef: In defense of grassland agriculture.” Our two nationally recognized speakers, Nicolette Hahn Niman and Dr. Alan Franzluebbers, will be diving into the perceived issues beef is causing our planet and human health, along with grazing strategies we can implement on our lands to improve the biological health and functioning of our soils. If you are a farmer, land manager or a preservationist, this conference will be an honest discussion about how we as humans can manage grazers to promote human and environmental health.

Nicolette Hahn Niman, was once a vegetarian environmental lawyer working for Waterkeeper Alliance and the National Wildlife Federation who challenged industrialized meat production. She now is an influential leader in promoting grassland agriculture where she believes ruminants on the land are essential for robust and diverse ecosystems and planetary health. In her presentations she will discuss in detail the current allegations confronting beef in regard to the negative effects on the environment and its reputation for causing adverse health issues in humans when consumed in our diets. She will also broach the topic of “faux meat” and how this alternative is not the answer that it is being showcased to be. In her recently released expanded and revised book “Defending Beef- The Ecological and Nutritional Case for Meat ” Niman states “It’s not the cow, it’s the how!” which sums up her solution for better meat for a better planet.
Dr. Alan Franzluebbers, a USDA professor of soil ecology with NC State University, will be presenting on the topics of “The Importance of Forages in American Agriculture” and “Soil Organic Matter and Biological Activity Under Fescue Pastures – Taking advantage of those things that can be managed.” He will be discussing how grasslands have been an absolute key component in most sustainable agricultural systems since the birth of America. Dr. Franzluebbers will also walk us through new research that examines strategies that can be used to tap into the soil’s natural fertility cycles to increase organic matter levels while utilizing natural carbon and nitrogen sources, therefore eliminating the need for heavy use of external nitrogen inputs.
Please join us for discussion, connection, and review of new science at the Annual VFGC Winter Conference January 18-21, 2022.
