Small Ruminants for Small Farms

It's kidding season at Painted Hand Farm, one of the best and hardest times of the year!
It’s kidding season at Painted Hand Farm, one of the best and hardest times of the year!

Like many of us, Sandra Kay Miller of Painted Hand Farm, always wanted to be a farmer, and she’s managed to live her dream raising meat goats, sheep and the occasional cow using targeted and rotational grazing. In this video from the Pennsylvania Grazing Lands Coalition, Sandra talks about how rotational grazing works for her, and describes the market for her product and the economics of raising goats.

One of the important points Sandra brings up in this video is the nutritional needs of small ruminants. Check back next week to learn more as we begin a series of articles on pasture management for small ruminants.

Sandra is known for how hard she has worked to help her fellow farmers be successful. She’s been an unstoppable force when it comes to starting and maintaining farmers markets, and she’s known for helping consumers learn more about where their food comes from and the importance of supporting local farmers.

I am the founder, editor and publisher of On Pasture, now retired. My career spanned 40 years of finding creative solutions to problems, and sharing ideas with people that encouraged them to work together and try new things. From figuring out how to teach livestock to eat weeds, to teaching range management to high schoolers, outdoor ed graduation camping trips with fifty 6th graders at a time, building firebreaks with a 130-goat herd, developing the signs and interpretation for the Storm King Fourteen Memorial trail, receiving the Conservation Service Award for my work building the 150-mile mountain bike trail from Grand Junction, Colorado to Moab, Utah...well, the list is long so I'll stop with, I've had a great time and I'm very grateful.
