One of my cousins worked on a ranch and he took HUGE pride in how difficult his work life was. Sometimes it seemed he made it even harder on purpose. But we’re not all like that. While we may take pride in how hard we work, we may not even notice that sometimes we’re just doing things the hard way. So that’s what we’ll take a look at with this week’s collection.
Enjoy!

First, let’s look at WHY we do things the hard way.
These South Dakota ranchers have some ideas about that.
Making Life Easier
Now let’s get some ideas for things we can do differently.
We start with Tom Krawiec who has come up with a mantra that has made everything easier on his ranching operation: “Can a 12-year-old do this?”
Sometimes we’re just adding to our workload for no good reason. Here’s a suggestion from John Marble about how to make our record-keeping lives easier.
Livestock Record Keeping Advice From a Heretic: Stop Writing Stuff Down!
I came up with my own invention for making graziers’ lives easier when it comes to weed management: let your livestock do it for you. Here’s a breakdown of our history with weed management, what it can and can’t do for you, and some links to give yourself a better option.
I Know You Paid A Lot of Money to Manage Weeds, But It Just Doesn’t Work
And one more thing – Greg Judy is always coming up with ways to make graziers’ lives easier. I help him and Jan with their email newsletters and the latest one out today gives folks a heads-up on their Grazing Schools, and some really great livestock purchasing opportunities. You can read it here, and if you like, sign up for their email list here.
“But I get a lot out of doing things the hard way!”
Actually, I’ve seen a lot of ingenuity come out of doing things the hard way. Here’s an excellent example you can use for an excuse for not making changes. 🙂
And The Funnies!
In honor of quitting day (the second Friday of January when we all quit trying to keep our New Years resolutions) here’s some data for you.
