On Pasture probably would not exist if it weren’t for Troy Bishopp. He was one of the folks in a small group of folks that I approached with the idea of a unique publication that would serve graziers with both science and experience to improve their management and increase profit. He supported the idea and in the 9 years since, he’s supported On Pasture and its readers with lots of articles, and me with advice and good counsel. So this week, I’m celebrating him and the many awards he’s won for his writing and photography.
When it comes to supporting folks in agriculture, there are not many people who work as hard at as Troy does. In addition to over 80 articles for On Pasture and the annual updates of his free grazing chart templates, Troy also writes for several other publications, including Country Folks. All that is in addition to his “day job” with the Madison County Conservation District and his other job – managing the family farm grazing operation.
So it’s fitting that over the years, Troy has been a regular recipient of numerous “Cap” Creal Journalism Awards. Like Troy, New York State Assemblyman Harold “Cap” Creal was committed to improving the lives of farmers in his state, earning him the title “Mr. New York State Agriculture” for his efforts on their behalf. The annual award in his name recognizes well-written, informative, and timely news stories and photos about agriculture in New York State.
This year, Troy won for his work in three categories: in print news for his story, “Stress management for women in agriculture,” for his online story in On Pasture, “What is the true meaning of grazing?” and for his Country Folks cover photo of a central New York wheat harvest.
I’m proud of what On Pasture has been able to do for graziers thanks to Troy’s hard work, and I’m honored to be his friend and colleague. Join me in congratulating Troy for his well deserved recognition!
