Surprising News About Deep Soil Carbon

The more we know about soil carbon, the better we can make it work for us. Here’s some great information to help us from the Agriculture Research Service.

    I am so pleased to have the article ON PASTURE sent to me. I started totally Organic Farming on my 32 cow dairy farm in 1953. This was after my bad experience with 24-D herbicide in 1949. Never used it again. This prompted me to experiment for three years testing organic vs chemicals. My 32 cow dairy herd taught me they wanted organic over chemically grown pasture and roughage. They are the best chemists if given a choose and they took organic every time. I will send you a book — Learned by the Fencepost– I had published in 2011.     This article On Pasture made my day. I started Organic Farming on my 32 cow dairy farm in Vermont in 1950. The use of 24-D herbicide in 1949 started me to experiment with Organic in 1950. I used to much herbicide at turn around and left a quarter moon circle where nothing grew for years. My three years of experiments 1950 thru 1952 proved to me Organic was superior to chemicals. My cows with their four stomach were my teachers. Also the earthworms as well. I stopped use all chemicals in 1953. I 1958 I won the New England Green Pasture contest over thousands of chemical Farmers. I never took any grant money as I did not want money interfering with my common sense and logic. My theme is FERTILE SOIL IS THE LIFE BLOOD OF THE EARTH AND ALL FOOD COMES FROM THE SOIL — FOOD — HEALTH IN THIS ORDER. It was before the hot acid chemicals have turned the organic matter (carbon) to CO2 the green house gas causing global warming. What did not go to the atmosphere has leached to the water ways causing unbelievable fish kill.

    If even corn after corn can build soil carbon, what depleted SOM in the first place? Erosion?

      To Edmund: Corn after corn cannot build enough soil carbon unless one uses the organic method to feed the plants. Chemical fertilizer hot acids burn up the SOM and overload the plants intake of nitrogen. The soil carbon is now CO2 the green house gas causing global warming. There is no root system as not needed.

      The big mistake that organic people make is the soil has to be prepared differently than for chemicals. There is 78% N in the atmosphere that can be trapped with deep till and organic matter when it rains. This is the same with oxygen 20% that hardly is mentioned but necessary for the earthworms and microoganisims. Both elements are gas and will disspatate back to the atmosphere if not held. it takes time to get the soil back if chemicals have been used before. The rototillers do not go deep enough buy just cause a shallow hardpan that organic roots cannot penetrate.
